Mayfield (thumb) "might do some stuff in practice this week" but appears unlikely to play Sunday against the Steelers, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
After dislocating his right thumb late in a Sept. 27 loss to the Vikings, Mayfield was given a rough recovery timeline of 3-to-6 weeks. The veteran quarterback recently transitioned to a smaller splint for his thumb, which the Buccaneers hope will allow him to resume gripping and throwing the football this week. While Mayfield might have an outside chance at suiting up Sunday if he ends up returning to practice within the next day or two and is able to throw without any limitations, undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels still appears to be trending toward a third consecutive start at this stage of the week.
Head coach Todd Bowles said Friday that Mayfield (thumb) now is in a smaller splint, and the Bucs will see if he can progress to gripping the football next week, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The Buccaneers will take on the Browns on Sunday, marking the second time Mayfield will start against the team that selected him with the first-overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports.
Mayfield faced the Browns in Week 1 of the 2022 season as a member of the Panthers, with Carolina losing 26-24. Mayfield had a 29-30 record as a starter for the Browns and led Cleveland to its first playoff victory in 2020, a 48-37 win over Pittsburgh in the AFC wild-card round. The Browns opted to move on from Mayfield during the 2022 offseason in order to conduct a sign-and-trade with the Texans for Deshaun Watson, with the former briefly spending time with both the Panthers and Rams before finding a home with the Buccaneers in 2023. After months of extension talks during the 2026 offseason and training camp, Mayfield signed a three-year, $165 million contract extension with Tampa Bay prior to the team's Week 1 loss to Cincinnati.
