Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said Monday that Mason is being further evaluated after experiencing thumb soreness coming out of Sunday's 39-22 win over the Packers, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
Mason (30 of 65 offensive snaps) and Aaron Jones (29 snaps) had a near-even split of the backfield reps Week 1, with the former leading the ground attack with 59 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries while going without a target. The 27-year-old apparently hurt his thumb at some point during the contest, but the Vikings haven't yet indicated that the injury is anything more than a day-to-day concern. Mason will likely be put through more tests before the Vikings have a clearer picture of his status heading into a Week 2 matchup with the Bears.
Mason rushed 15 times for 59 yards and a touchdown but wasn't targeted in Sunday's 39-22 win over the Packers.

The Vikings have informed Aaron Jones that he will be released at the start of the new league year March 11 barring a trade, per Adam Schefter of ESPN, leaving Mason atop the depth chart at running back.
Mason led the Vikings with 758 rushing yards in 16 games in 2025, while Jones had just 548 rushing yards in 12 games while being limited by injuries, including a hip injury that kept Jones out of the regular-season finale. While Mason has the inside track on the lead role for 2026, Minnesota's likely to add competition at running back through free agency or the draft. Mason hasn't been much of a contributor in passing situations, with just 28 catches in 61 regular-season games.
