Skowronek suffered a concussion in Thursday's 28-27 preseason loss to the Bills, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.
Skowronek has entered the NFL's five-step concussion protocol. The wide receiver will need to be cleared by an independent neurologist to ultimately be cleared for game action. If the 29-year-old cannot recover from the injury by the Steelers' Week 1 showdown with the Falcons, Kaden Wetjen projects to fill the No. 5 wide receiver role.
Skowronek worked ahead of Kaden Wetjen on offense during spring practices, according to Mike DeFabo of The Athletic.
If Skowronek can hold Wetjen off for the fifth spot on Pittsburgh's wide receiver depth chart, the former would put himself in position to make the team. Wetjen's likely to make the roster regardless thanks to the rookie fourth-round pick's ability as a return man, but Skowronek would probably become expendable if the Steelers believe they have five better options on offense at wide receiver. Skowronek has worked in a depth role while contributing on special teams in each of the past two campaigns with Pittsburgh, recording 69 receiving yards apiece in the 2024 and 2025 regular seasons.
Skowronek secured four of six targets for 69 yards and a touchdown while appearing in all 17 regular-season games in 2025.
Everyone sharing the ball with Ben, most valuable first.
