The Dolphins placed Achane (knee) on injured reserve Monday.
Achane's move to injured reserve was merely a formality after head coach Jeff Hafley confirmed earlier Monday that the running back would be lost for the season after sustaining an ACL tear in his left knee during Sunday's 24-10 loss to Kansas City. With Achane out of the mix for the rest of 2026, the Dolphins are left with Jaylen Wright (foot) and Ollie Gordon as the lone running backs on the 53-man roster.

The Dolphins traded for Jarquez Hunter shortly before cutdown day, but he ultimately didn't make the 53-man roster, though Hunter remains in the organization as part of the practice squad. Fullback D.J. Herman is also listed as a running back, but the team's backfield is otherwise unchanged from 2025, when Achane produced a career-high 1,838 scrimmage yards. The team around Achane went through an offseason overhaul, including the addition of mobile QB Malik Willis, but Achane projects to maintain a prominent role as the centerpiece of an otherwise unproven offense.

New Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley indicated Monday on the Rich Eisen Show that he'd told his starting running back that "you better be in good shape," and that he wouldn't shy away from giving Achane a huge workload if necessary. Achane saw a career-high 305 touches over 16 regular-season games last season with a season high of 28 in a Week 10 tilt against the Bills, but that only averaged out to 19.1 touches per game. The NFL's touch leader in 2025 was Christian McCaffrey with 413 in 17 regular-season contests, or 24.3 per game, while Derrick Henry had the single-game high of 36. Henry was also the last player to top 40 touches in a game, getting 41 in Week 2 of the 2021 season with the Titans. Hafley's target may be somewhat lofty, but it does suggest that Achane will wind up as one of the league leaders in touches in 2026 if he can hold up under that workload.
