Rice is expected to catch passes from Patrick Mahomes out of the gate in the regular season, as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Mahomes is on track to start Week 1 against the Broncos.
Rice and Mahomes both dealt with knee injuries during the offseason, and the wide receiver also had some legal troubles, but it looks like both players will be available for the start of the regular season. Having Mahomes throwing him the ball should be a huge boon for Rice, as Mahomes has a career average of 285.2 passing yards per regular-season game, which is the best mark in NFL history. Backup quarterback Justin Fields averages just 153. passing yards per regular-season game.
Rice played offensive 10 snaps in Kansas City's 9-9 exhibition tie with the Seahawks on Friday and did not record any targets or touches.
Rice and some of Kansas City's key offensive starters got to log some reps during the first quarter before being pulled. Though he didn't produce any offensive output, it's notable that Rice took part in his first game action since he landed on IR due to a concussion late last December. Rice had a tumultuous offseason, as he spent some time in jail due to a probation violation and also had a minor procedure on his right knee, but he appears healthy and isn't expected to face NFL discipline for the legal issue. As such, he can be penciled in as the Chiefs' top WR heading into Week 1 versus Denver on Monday, Sept. 14.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said Rice is unlikely to face NFL discipline for his probation violation this spring, Charles Goldman of AtoZ Sports reports.
